Local Councils news during bad weather

8th December 2011

Over recent winters the country has seen a spate of bad weather that has lead to the closure of local services such as schools, nurseries and so on.

People are always urged to check with local council web sites for the latest information. If you are a local council, is this something that you can easily update and do quickly? If you are a local resident, how is your council performing in this respect?

Having a local council web site that regularly lists meeting agendas and minutes, as well as some local event information is one responsibility, but during periods where news and information that directly and immediately impacts residents, the web site should also be the main hub of information for all.

Radio announcements and local TV news channels will only have a low hit rate. More and more people will turn to the Internet to find out what is happening. However, even updating a web page may be difficult at times should the relevant people be stuck traveling to work or at home.

Having a web based system with e-mango means that council staff may also edit their pages from home.

Another extremely useful tip would be to use a Social Media platform such as Twitter to post continual updates. e-mango can incorporate the stream of news from Twitter onto the main council web site, so it reduces the need for council staff to be at a computer to log into the content management system. If staff have smartphones, then by using a mobile app they can quickly post updates onto Twitter, which then automatically get shown on the council web site.

Has your council considered harnessing the power of Social Media yet?
